The Chequers
“A beautifully restored Cotswold pub”
This Grade II listed pub in the heart of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire was sympathetically restored, embracing the period features but also resisting the temptation to completely re-model the interior.
We kept the main bar pretty much as it was and we were fortunate that the pub already had a number of beautiful working fireplaces, cosy snugs and the warmth of Cotswold stone.
We wanted to retain this intimate feel and so kept the lighting levels low with wall lights, table and floor lamps. The ceilings were painted a deep and moody green and the walls in a rich dark red. To the rear of the pub was an existing glazed extension, linking through to an old stable building which was largely unused with differing floor levels and low partition walls.
We proposed a completely new timber floor throughout and by removing the columns and low walls, we were able to open up the entire space and restore it to its former glory. It is now light filled, dynamic and characterful room which helps give the Chequers an extra dimension.
